CVs Are Dead, Sort Of – What Clients Are Really Looking For Now
Let me spill the (recruitment) tea.
This week I had a brilliant chat with a client at a leading law firm in London, the kind of firm where you’d assume they scrutinise every comma on a CV with a magnifying glass. But what they said completely confirmed what I’ve been seeing across the market:
CVs? They’re not dead. But they’re no longer the star of the show.
Here’s what this hiring manager told me:
“Yes, we scan the CV — but I’m far more interested in what someone brings to the table on day one and how we can support their growth in the next 3 to 5 years.”
Boom. That right there is the future of recruitment. And trust me it’s already happening.
The Death of the Perfect CV
For years, candidates have obsessed over formatting, buzzwords, and whether to use Arial or Calibri (spoiler: no one cares). But in 2025, your CV is simply a conversation starter, not the full pitch.
Yes, your experience matters. No, typos are not excusable (this isn’t Love Island, babes). But more and more clients are looking beyond the Word doc and asking deeper, smarter questions:
- What impact will this person make from Day One?
- Can we picture them in our team meetings, with our clients, adding to our culture?
- What skills or potential gaps can we help them grow into?
What Clients Value Now (and It’s Not Your Degree from 2012)
Here’s what top legal and accountancy firms are really evaluating in 2025:
1. Value on Day One:
Can you hit the ground running? Do you bring something niche, valuable, or just damn reliable to the team straight away?
2. Growth Trajectory:
Employers want someone they can invest in. They’re actively mapping where they can take you; development plans, future leadership, niche expertise.
3. Cultural Fit:
This is huge. Are you aligned with their vision? Can you collaborate with the team, or are you a lone wolf in a tailored suit?
4. Mindset Over Milestones:
Clients are shifting away from ticking off job titles. They want problem-solvers, self-starters, and people who actually care. (It helps if you’re also not a complete drain to work with.)
What This Means for Candidates
Stop obsessing over perfecting every sentence on your CV. Instead:
- Start working on your personal pitch: who you are, what you’re about, what you bring.
- Be ready to talk about your growth goals. Clients want to grow with you, not drag you along.
- Show self-awareness. Be real about what you’re great at and what you want to improve.
- And for heaven’s sake bring a bit of personality. You’re not a robot.
And for My Fellow Recruiters…
This is a massive reminder that our job is about storytelling, not CV forwarding.
We have to bring people to life beyond the paper. Understand their journey, their spark, and where they’ll thrive then show our clients the human, not just the highlights.
