David Did It! – Beyond the Surface: Why Real Recruitment Means Understanding the ‘Why’
Today brought one of those moments that perfectly encapsulates why we do what we do at Hawthorne-Finch Talent Solutions. An email landed in my inbox from a law firm client that made me pause and reflect on the stark difference between transactional recruitment and true consultative partnership.
The Email That Started It All
“Another recruiter contacted me today who knows this candidate you submitted yesterday. They have been working with them for months and had a number of interviews booked in already. That recruiter said the reason they never sent me their CV was as they are not suited. They want to only work from home”
On the surface, this seems straightforward enough. Candidate wants remote work, firm doesn’t offer it, case closed. But here’s where most recruiters stop digging – and where we’re just getting started.
The Problem with Face-Value Recruitment
Too many agencies in our industry treat candidates like commodities. They hear “I want to work from home” and immediately categorise that person as inflexible or unsuitable for office-based roles. They’re missing the fundamental point of what recruitment should be: understanding people, not just processing CVs.
At Hawthorne-Finch, we don’t just generate CVs and hope for the best. We consult. We listen. We dig deeper into the ‘why’ behind every requirement because we know that surface-level answers rarely tell the whole story.
Understanding the Real Story
When a candidate says they want remote work, there’s always a deeper reason. In this particular case, our thorough consultation process revealed something the other agency had completely missed:
- The Real Issue: This solicitor wasn’t actually demanding remote work – they were escaping a toxic office environment where poor management behaviours had created an unbearable workplace culture.
- What They Actually Needed: A supportive, collaborative team environment where their contributions would be valued and celebrated.
- The Perfect Match: Our client offers hybrid working, but more importantly, they have a fantastic team culture where colleagues celebrate and support each other’s wins rather than taking credit for work done.
The Hawthorne-Finch Difference
This situation highlighted several scenarios we encounter regularly:
The Toxic Escape: Candidates who say they want remote work because they’ve been in what they consider a toxic office space (we’ve all been there).
The Flexibility Need: Those who mention working from home when what they really need is flexible working arrangements for things like school pick-ups.
The Focus Factor: Professionals who work better in quiet environments but don’t realise certain firms offer privacy pods or quiet working spaces.
Our job as recruiters is to ask the right questions, listen actively, and understand the underlying motivations. Only then can we make personalised recommendations that truly support both immediate requirements and long-term career goals.
The Human Cost of Lazy Recruitment
What troubled me most about this situation was realising how the other agency had essentially tried to sabotage this candidate’s chances at what could have been their ideal career move – all because they couldn’t be bothered to understand the real story and were a Bitter Betty they hadn’t. Thankfully they failed!
This isn’t just about closing deals or hitting targets. These are people’s lives, careers, and incomes we’re working with. Every CV represents someone’s aspirations, their family’s security, their professional future.
The Right Way Forward
Having met with our client’s Managing Partner numerous times, I know they put their team’s wellbeing first. They understand that supporting staff reduces turnover and creates a positive working environment where everyone thrives. A little consideration goes a long way.
When I presented this solicitor’s profile to our client’s HR Team, I could provide context, insight, and genuine understanding of what would make this placement successful for everyone involved. That’s the difference between recruitment and consultative partnership.
The Bigger Picture
This experience made me reflect on how many times agencies try to sabotage candidates’ chances at career moves, whether through laziness, lack of understanding, or simply prioritising quick wins over long-term success.
At Hawthorne-Finch, we believe in doing better. We believe in taking the time to understand, to listen, and to match not just skills and experience, but personality, culture, and genuine compatibility.
Because at the end of the day, successful recruitment isn’t about placing bodies in roles – it’s about creating partnerships that benefit everyone involved and contribute to long-term career satisfaction and business success.
Ready to experience recruitment done right? Whether you’re a candidate looking for your next career move or a client seeking the perfect addition to your team, we’re here to listen, understand, and deliver results that last.
