David Did It! Special LA Edition: What Charmed Taught Me About Recruitment – A Magical Look at Hiring & Team Building

Ah, Charmed – the iconic late ’90s/early 2000s TV show that gave us witchy wardrobes, demon-fighting drama, and the ultimate lesson in sisterhood (with the occasional power struggle thrown in for good measure).

As I am was due to visit LA (which, let’s be honest, is amazing), I found myself rewatching a few classic Charmed episodes. The house that feature as Charmed Manor resides in LA while the show is based in San Francisco. Somewhere between a vanquishing spell and a glamoured disguise, I had a wild thought:

Turns out, the Power of Three isn’t just for witches, it’s recruitment gold. So here’s a magical take on how Charmed can teach us a thing or two about hiring, agency life, and building high-performing teams.

Prue: Strong, strategic, the natural leader.

Piper: The calm in the chaos, a logistical genius.

Phoebe: Creative, intuitive, and all about the vibes.

Sound familiar? Great recruitment teams have their own “Halliwell dynamic” – a blend of doers, thinkers, feelers, and planners. It’s not about having three of the same recruiter—it’s about building a team where strengths complement and challenge each other. That is like our team, I recruited a team that would challenge me and my thoughts and be able to support me in developing my skills in my areas of weakness/development.

Recruitment magic isn’t about casting the same spell over and over (yeah we mean you Harry Potter with your Expelliarmus). It’s about tailoring your power (and approach) to the mission at hand.

Look, not all hires turn out to be angels and some are full-on demonic. The Halliwells had to deal with shapeshifters, fire-throwers, and the occasional warlock masquerading as a love interest. Sound familiar?

In recruitment, we’ve all had the candidate who dazzled in the interview but turned out to be a walking red flag. Or the client who looked like a dream but turned into a ghost the second we mentioned market rates.

Lesson? Spot the demons early, trust your gut, and don’t ignore the signs (especially when someone’s glowing red or disappearing into flames, metaphorically speaking).

Much like magical bloodlines, team chemistry can’t be forced. The Halliwells worked because they had deep respect, open communication, and knew when to lean on each other.

That’s the vibe you want in your hiring process. Skills matter, but culture fit matters more. You can teach someone your ATS, but you can’t teach kindness, resilience, or a good sense of humour under pressure.

Hiring managers, take note: Hire for the coven, not just the role.

The Halliwells had the Book of Shadows. We have Vincere, LinkedIn, and years of notes on candidates we know like the back of our wand.

Whether you’re a recruiter or a hiring manager, your talent pool is your spellbook. Keep it up to date. Document everything. And when in doubt ask your Recruitment Oracle (aka your Consultant).

No matter how powerful the Halliwells were, if they didn’t use their powers wisely, chaos ensued.

Same goes for your recruitment strategy. If you’re sitting on great CVs, delaying interviews, or lowballing offers, don’t be surprised when the spell fizzles out. Good hiring takes action, collaboration, and trust in your recruiter’s process.

Whether you’re running an agency, scaling an accountancy firm, or building out a legal team, the true magic is in the people.

The Halliwells saved the world (and looked fab doing it) because they worked together, stayed true to their values, and learned from every challenge.

In recruitment, that’s how you win too.
