How to Avoid Agency Wars: Practical Solutions for Recruitment Agencies

Welcome to another episode of “David Did It!”—your go-to blog for tips, tricks, and laughs from the world of UK Legal and Accountancy Practice Recruitment. Today, we’re diving into a topic that every recruiter has faced but few discuss: Agency Wars.

When multiple recruitment agencies compete for the same roles, it’s a recipe for stress, confusion, and—let’s face it—drama. But don’t fret; I’ve got some strategies to help you rise above the fray and focus on what really matters: building strong client and candidate relationships while maintaining your recruitment agency’s reputation.

The Trouble with Duplicate Applications

Recently, I spoke with an award-winning London law firm, now a client of mine, about their hiring processes. They asked how I source candidates and ensure I don’t submit the same candidates as other agencies. While I do my due diligence—speaking with candidates about their applications and reviewing law firm and accountancy practice websites—sometimes candidates forget where they’ve already applied. It happens!

Unfortunately, duplicate applications can confuse clients, frustrate candidates, and harm an agency’s credibility. So, how do we avoid it?

1. Set Up Clear Communication with Clients

  • Exclusive Listings: Whenever possible, encourage your clients to offer exclusive roles. Not only does this streamline the process, but it also ensures candidates aren’t submitted multiple times.
  • Transparent Policies: Establish clear submission protocols with your clients, so everyone knows what to expect.

2. Internal Coordination Is Key

  • Centralised Database: Invest in a centralised recruitment CRM to track candidate submissions across your team. It’s a lifesaver for avoiding internal duplicates.
  • Team Huddles: Regular meetings to discuss open roles and candidate progress ensure everyone is aligned.

3. Respect the Competition

  • Professionalism Always Wins: It’s tempting to focus on what other agencies are doing, but maintaining a professional attitude will set you apart.
  • Respect Boundaries: Honour agreements and don’t undercut other agencies. A healthy dose of mutual respect goes a long way.

In the world of legal and accountancy recruitment, the competition is fierce. As RuPaul famously says, “Don’t be bitter, just be better!” Here’s how:

1. Put Candidates First

  • Quality Over Quantity: Take the time to really understand your candidates. What are their career goals? Which firms suit their aspirations?
  • Stay in Touch: Regular updates and check-ins with your candidates show you care, and that can make all the difference.

2. Strengthen Client Relationships

  • Build Trust: Transparency and consistency are your secret weapons. Your clients will appreciate honest communication.
  • Offer Value: Go beyond just placing candidates. Share industry trends, advice, and insights to position yourself as a trusted advisor.

3. Invest in Yourself

  • Stay Ahead of Trends: Attend industry events, complete certifications, and stay updated on the evolving legal and accountancy markets.
  • Don’t Forget Self-Care: A happy recruiter is a productive recruiter. Burnout benefits no one!

In a competitive field like legal and accountancy practice recruitment, avoiding agency wars isn’t just about staying professional—it’s about thriving through clarity, communication, and a laser focus on your candidates and clients.

With the right approach, you’ll not only avoid the drama but also build a reputation as the go-to recruiter for both employers and candidates.
