Yorkshire & North West Legal Recruitment Market Update:
Property Law Continues to Dominate Hiring Demand
If you’re a solicitor in Yorkshire or the North West and you’ve been wondering whether it’s “a good time to move”, here’s what we’re seeing day-to-day.
Over the last 43 days, the most consistent hiring demand we’ve observed has been in:
- Commercial Property – 30 vacancies
- Construction – 27 vacancies
- Private Client – 23 vacancies
- Residential Property – 21 vacancies
- Employment – 19 vacancies
The headline isn’t “look at our vacancies”.
The headline is: Property law isn’t slowing down.
What this means for you (as a candidate)
1) If you’re in Property, you’ve got options
When demand stays this steady, it usually creates:
- more movement between firms
- more counteroffers
- more urgency to secure good people before competitors do
That doesn’t mean you should jump for anything. It means you can be picky about the right team, the right support, and the right long-term path.
2) Firms are hiring for different reasons (and it changes the role)
Not all vacancies are equal. Two “Commercial Property Solicitor” roles can look identical on paper but feel completely different in reality.
Behind the scenes, the best questions to ask are:
- Is this growth, replacement, or backfill?
- What does the pipeline look like right now?
- What’s the team structure (and who will you actually learn from)?
- What’s the realistic expectation in the first 3–6 months?
3) Your CV needs to make your experience obvious in 10 seconds
In busy markets, CVs get skim-read. Make it easy for someone to place you quickly:
- list your core matters clearly (not just “varied caseload”)
- show sector exposure (developer work, landlord and tenant, secured lending, HNW estates, etc.)
- include deal sizes or complexity where you can
- clarify anything that could be misread (short stints, FTCs, career breaks)
4) Don’t ignore “fit” factors (they’re why people leave)
Most short-lived moves aren’t about salary. They’re about missing basics:
- working pattern that doesn’t match what was discussed
- lack of supervision/mentoring
- unclear progression
- unrealistic billing expectations
- culture mismatch
If you’re considering a move, decide your non-negotiables before you apply.
Quick self-check: are you in the right seat?
If you’re in Property (or adjacent) and any of these are true, it may be worth a conversation:
- you’re doing the work but not getting the title/pay to match
- you’ve outgrown the level of supervision you’re getting
- you want better quality work or a clearer route to progression
- you’re carrying a caseload that’s not sustainable
- you’re being promised “development” but not seeing it
