Your CV Got You the Interview, But Your Personality Got You the Job

Your CV? It’s your golden ticket. But let’s be real – no one hires a piece of paper. The difference between “We’ll be in touch” and “Welcome to the team”? You.

In a world where recruiters and hiring managers are drowning in nearly identical CVs, your experience gets you noticed, but your personality seals the deal.

Think about it. If it were just about qualifications, everyone with the same degree and experience would land the job. But hiring is about people, not just skills.

Employers want to know:

  • Can they work with you every day?
  • Do you add something to their team beyond just ticking the skills box?
  • Are you someone they actually want to grab a coffee (or pint) with after work?

Because let’s be honest, no one wants to hire a walking CV with zero charisma.

1. Ditch the Robot Act

Yes, you should be professional, but don’t be afraid to show who you are. A bit of humour? A genuine passion for what you do? That’s what makes you stand out.

David Did It! Tip: Think of your interview like a first date – you wouldn’t just recite your LinkedIn profile, would you? (If you do, I have concerns.)

2. Research, But Make It Personal

Go beyond the company website. Find something relatable – maybe the CEO’s career started just like yours, or the company’s values match your own.

Mention it. Make it a conversation, not an interrogation.

3. Confidence Without Arrogance

There’s a fine line between confidence and coming across like Lord Sugar. Sell your skills without sounding like you’re auditioning for The Apprentice.

4. Ask Questions That Matter

Skip the “What’s a typical day like?” and try “What type of person thrives in this role?”. It shows confidence and helps you assess if they’re a fit for you too.

5. Read the Room

Your interviewers are humans (shock, I know). Adapt your energy to theirs – if they’re relaxed, match it. If they’re serious, keep it professional but approachable.

Culture Fit: The Deal Breaker

Even if you smash the interview, if you don’t align with the company culture, the job won’t feel right. It’s a two-way street, you’re interviewing them too!

Signs of a strong culture fit:

  • You feel comfortable being yourself
  • Their team dynamic excites you
  • Their values align with your own

Red flags? High turnover, vague answers about company culture, or an interviewer who looks like they’d rather be anywhere else.

Hiring isn’t about the “perfect” CV – it’s about the right person. Show them your skills, personality, and how you’ll add value.

Because the best candidates? They don’t just fit the job, they elevate it.
